ATTORNEY DAVID GLADISH
Attorney Gladish has resided in Lake County, Indiana for most of his life. Attorney Gladish is a graduate of Munster High School, Class of 1987 and went on to attend Calumet College of St. Joseph where he graduated Cum Laude in 1991 with a B.A. in Criminal Justice. At the time of graduation, Attorney Gladish was selected not only as a 1991 member of Who’s Who in American Universities and Colleges, but also as the Outstanding Criminal Justice Graduate. After graduation, Attorney Gladish was hired by the Hammond City Court as probation officer and obtained his license in August of 1992 by passing the required State of Indiana testing by the Judicial Conference of Indiana. Attorney Gladish then went on to earn his Juris Doctor from Valparaiso University School of Law in 1995. In a four (4) day period in July of 1995, Attorney Gladish took both the Indiana and Illinois Bar Examinations and passed them both on his first attempt at taking the examinations. Presently, Attorney Gladish is licensed to practice law in the States of Indiana and Illinois as well as having membership in the Indiana Trial Lawyers Association, Lake County Bar Association, East Chicago Bar Association and the Delta Theta Phil Law Fraternity. Attorney Gladish is entitled to practice before all courts of Indiana and Illinois, as well as the United States District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of Indiana, the Northern District of Illinois and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
Next, the question that needs to be addressed is, “What type of practice does Attorney Gladish maintain?” Well, the practice is made up of mostly three (3) types of cases which are injury/wrongful death, medical malpractice and/or civil rights. As part of his practice, Attorney Gladish has demonstrated his ability to handle these types of cases through testing, trials and recognition by his peers. Attorney Gladish is a Board Certified Civil Trial Specialists since 2002 as certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy; a Member of the Indiana Super Lawyers 2010-2013 in the area of Personal Injury – Plaintiff; a member of Top 100 Indiana Trial Lawyers by the American Trial Lawyers Association 2010-present; a Million Dollar Advocate Lifetime Member since 2007; and Member of American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) since 2011 with the Rank of Advocate which is earned by the number of civil trial that the attorney has conducted as lead counsel. Attorney Gladish has also been selected numerous times as a member of “Who’s Who in American Law” and “Who’s Who in America”. Finally, Attorney Gladish has completed the 10 hour OSHA course for general industry training in 2012.
As for community involvement, Attorney Gladish has been teaching Legal Writing and Research I & II at Calumet College of St. Joseph in Hammond Indiana as an Adjunct Professor since 2000. Attorney Gladish has been doing a radio show on WJOB 1230 as legal commentator since 2004 as well as writing legal articles for the Calumet Press Newspaper from 2004 to 2005. Attorney Gladish is currently writing a weekly blog about new cases that have been decided recently by both the Indiana Supreme Court and the Indiana Court of Appeals which is part of this web site. Finally, Attorney Gladish has been selected to serve or has served on the Board of Directors and/or Advisory Boards for the following: Towle Community Theater, South Shore Arts Foundation, Calumet College Paralegal Program Advisory Board and the Calumet College Alumni Board.
ATTORNEY DOUGLAS WALKER
Attorney Douglas Walker is a graduate of Munster High School (Class of 1988) where he excelled in the classroom as well as athletics having received the Shearard Scholastic Award. Attorney Walker went on to attend Valparaiso University (Class of 1992) obtaining a degree in Accounting and thereafter successfully completed the rigorous CPA exam which he currently maintains in the State of Indiana as a Certified Public Accountant. In 1994, Attorney Walker returned to Valparaiso to attend the Valparaiso University School of Law, where he became a member of the University’s prestigious Law Review as a Note Editor and Moot Court Society resulting in appellate arguments in competitions involving issues such as trademark protection and harassment in the workplace. Attorney Walker also served as Law Clerk in the Lake Superior Court. Upon receiving his Juris Doctor from Valparaiso University in 1997, Attorney Walker worked as a tax consultant for Price Waterhouse LLP, in Chicago, Illinois.
Thereafter, Attorney Walker returned to the practice law in Highland, Indiana where he served as a partner at the Law Firm of Blackmun, Bomberger, Tyler & Walker with his focus being on cases involving medical malpractice, business litigation and estate planning. Attorney Walker served as counsel for Methodist Hospital for over a decade and local counsel for the Indiana Department of Insurance in regard to the numerous cases filed against Mark Weinberger, M.D., the nose doctor. Attorney Walker has served as counsel for many other local businesses including businesses involving: scrap metal, car rentals, real estate development, a local radio station and more. Some of the complex issues he has successfully handled include defending the hospital against malpractice claims of res ipsa loquitor involving serious IV infiltration issues with an infant (The Methodist Hospitals, Inc. v. Nikita Johnson, et al., 45A05-0510-CV-593) and asserting statutory immunity found in I.C. 34-30-16-1 against claims that the hospital caused a quadruple homicide and suicide (Terry Dennie, Sr. v. The Methodist Hospitals, Inc., 45A03-0901-CV-26). In 2010, Attorney Walker joined the Law Firm of Hoeppner, Wagner and Evans, LLP, serving at the firm’s Merrillville and Valparaiso offices where Attorney Walker continued working on complex litigation issues and participated in the successful pursuit of claims made by ArcelorMittal against Wesco, wherein ArcelorMittal was awarded a jury verdict of $36,134,777 for damages sustained after blowout coils in the overhead crane at the No. 3 Steel Shop in East Chicago prematurely fractured causing a ladle of molten iron to spill and set fire to the shop. Post-trial motions have awarded ArcelorMittal an additional $3,897,000 in prejudgment interest, costs, and post-judgment interest to date. In August of 2014, Attorney Walker joined the Law Office of David Gladish, P.C., where Attorney Walker will continue to focus his practice in the areas of complex litigation including: personal injury, medical malpractice, business litigation and estate planning. Attorney Walker serves on the Board of Directors of the Lake County Bar Association and as a Director of The William J. Moran Memorial Scholarship Fund administered by The Legacy Foundation, Inc. Attorney Walker is one of the few attorneys that is both a Certified Public Accountant and licensed to practice law in the States of Indiana and Illinois.
ATTORNEY REBECCA BUCHANAN
Attorney Rebecca Buchanan is a lifelong resident of Lake County Indiana and a graduate of Morton High School, Class of 1970. Attorney Buchanan then attended Purdue University Calumet where she received an Associate Degree in Nursing in 1972. For 16 years, Attorney Buchanan enjoyed a very fast paced and interesting career in a local Emergency Department. In 1989, Attorney Buchanan joined the Risk Management staff at The Methodist Hospitals located in Gary and Merrillville, Indiana. Her primary duties were to investigate potential medical and nursing negligence, to analyze medical records for standard of care and regulatory issues and provide litigation support for the Law Firm of Blackmun, Bomberger, Tyler & Walker. After earning a Baccalaureate degree in Nursing and being awarded the Outstanding Nursing Student Award of 1992, she received her Juris Doctor from Valparaiso University School of Law in 1999. Thereafter, she continued to work for The Methodist Hospitals in the newly created position of the Corporate Compliance Coordinator and developed and implemented a Corporate Compliance Program. Attorney Buchanan also served as a member of the Institutional Review Board for Human Subjects as well as other committees that reflected her medical-legal interests. Those committees included: Bioethics Committee; Quality End-of-Life Committee; and the Patient’s Right Committee. Attorney Buchanan also became a Trainer for the American Medical Association Education in Palliative and End-of-Life-Care Program (EPEC) as well as assisting the medical and nursing staff in developing essential clinical competencies in end-of-life care. Finally, Attorney Buchanan served as the in-house counsel for the EMTALA Committee, HIPAA Committee, Prevention of Medical Errors Committee and Root Cause Analysis Committee.
In 2004, Attorney Buchanan joined the law firm of Blackmun, Bomberger, Tyler & Walker as an associate and continued her work in medical malpractice defense. Attorney Buchanan then started a Medical Malpractice consulting business. In May of 2015, Attorney Buchanan joined the Law Office of David Gladish, P.C. where she will continue to focus her extensive medical-legal and regulatory law expertise on personal injury, medical malpractice and nursing home negligence cases. She also will provide educational programs in Advance Directives or other medical-legal issues upon request.
When not at the office, Attorney Buchanan serves on the Board of Directors for Power Paws for Kids, Inc. AAT. She and her registered therapy dog Maggie volunteer for Hospice of the Calumet in Munster, Indiana as a Caring Canine Companion team. They serve the community by participating in reading to the dogs programs, visiting with nursing home residents, providing comfort to hospice patients and their families, and comforting Valparaiso University students during finals week.
Ms. Hurley has lived her entire life in either Starke or Lake County, Indiana and presently resides with her husband Joseph Hurley in Schererville, Indiana. Ms. Hurley is a 1984 graduate of Oregon-Davis High School in Hamlet, Indiana. Thereafter, Ms. Hurley went to Sawyer Business College and graduated with a certificate in Accounting and went on to work for the college. Later, Ms. Hurley decided that she would get involved in the legal field by becoming a legal secretary. After over twenty (20) years of experience and furthering her education, Ms. Hurley has worked her way from a legal secretary to the position of paralegal/office manager. Over the years, Ms. Hurley has constantly continued to develop her knowledge of the legal field by taking numerous Continuing Legal Education Classes as well as furthering her education at Calumet College of St. Joseph’s. Ms. Hurley currently assists Attorney Gladish with the following: in taking of client information; client relations and appointments; managing of office matters; assisting in all areas of discovery including: interrogatories, depositions, request for production of documents and setting of mock juries; as well as completing all court filings with both state and federal courts.
Ms. Harrison was somewhat a traveler as a child due to her parents being in the teaching field which allowed them to take different position throughout the Midwest. Nonetheless, Ms. Harrison has spent a significant portion of her life in Northwest Indiana where she attended La Porte High School, Class of 1965. Ms. Harrison then went on to Rockford College where she studied Greek and Latin, before going to Europe in 1969 where she eventually obtained her certification as a State Registered Nurse from Bolton Hospital Group that is located in Lancashire, England in 1974. Later, Ms. Harrison went on to obtain further certification at the Walton Hospital located in Merseyside, England in 1987 allowing her to perform in the operating room. Thereafter, Ms. Harrison worked in the Neurosurgery Operating Room at Atkinson Morley’s Hospital in Wimbledon, England as a Staff Nurse. Since returning to the United States, Ms. Harrison has continued her education in Office Administration and began working in the legal field 2002. Ms. Harrison currently assists Attorney Gladish with gathering, reviewing and summarizing medical records and billings, medical research, medical reviews as well as helping with client files and other office activities.
Ms. Hillman presently resides in Highland, Indiana with her husband Matthew and their two boys who attend the Highland Schools. As a child, Ms. Hillman grew up in a bilingual home where both Spanish and English were spoken a regular basis. Ms. Hillman went on to a graduate Thornridge High School, Class 1988. Thereafter, Ms. Hillman entered the banking profession as a teller and worked her way up to customer service representative and then private banking and investments assistant with Chase Banks from 1991 through 2008. Thereafter, Ms. Hillman decided to enter the legal profession in 2009 with the Law Office of David Gladish, P.C. Ms. Hillman is presently a bilingual legal secretary who brings the talent of assisting our Spanish speaking clients with answering questions presented to Attorney Gladish as well as helping with translating legal documents for the clients. Ms. Hillman also performs the follow as part of her duties: prepares letters, discovery requests and other legal documents; coordinates dates for depositions and hearings with the courts; as well as acting as our primary receptionist for the Law Office of David Gladish, P.C.
Mrs. Amber Ameling resides in Merrillville, Indiana and graduated from Merrillville High School in 2005. After graduation, Amber moved to Terre Haute, Indiana and attended Indiana State University. Amber majored in theater arts and philosophy before changing her career path to the legal field by attending Brown Mackie College where she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 2010. After graduation, Amber worked for another law firm in Merrillville for about five years before joining the Law Office of David Gladish, P.C. to work as a paralegal for Attorney Douglas Walker. When Amber is not at the office, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons as well as reading, going to the theater and the movies and listening to music.
Ms. Torrez is a Lake County resident who began her legal career in Chicago, Illinois in 1994. Ms. Torrez has worked in many areas of law such as asbestos defense, criminal defense, trademark patent prosecution, ERISA, real estate, corporate litigation, medical malpractice and personal injury both in Indiana and Illinois. Ms. Torrez received her Paralegal Certificate in May, 2005, and is pursuing her Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies. Ms. Torrez joins the firm as a Paralegal assisting Attorney Gladish with direct client contact, discovery preparation and all aspects of each case from beginning to end. She also completes all court filings in both Indiana and Illinois state courts as well as federal courts.
